COURSE SCHEDULE AND SYLLABUS:


Every 2-hour MOVIE is actually EIGHT 15-minute MINI-MOVIES, or sequences – AND SO IS THIS COURSE:

SATURDAY, DAY ONE:

SEQUENCE ONE: “Backstory”
Using the history of story, Chris plants the seeds for you to create your award-winning screenplay. He breaks down traditional three-act structure and lays the groundwork for The Mini-Movie Method.

SEQUENCE TWO: Enter “The Tension Dimension”!
Two vital ingredients create tension -- the key to an extraordinary screenplay. Learn what they are, how they interact. Master the Tension Dimension!

END OF ACT ONE! LUNCH!

This is it! How story changed forever with the advent of film. Mini-Movies, what they are, what they do, how they function. Learn the 8 turning points and how they “raise the stakes” and amp the tension.

AFTERNOON BREAK
SEQUENCE FOUR: "The Pattern of the Story"
Mini-Movies always do the same things – all eight sequences follow a pattern – after this you’ll know what it is!!!  Learn what must happen in Act One – your first two Mini-Movies!

DAY ONE SUPPLEMENTED WITH SCREENINGS FROM: RAIDERS OF THE LOST ARK, WHAT’S UP DOC, THE STING and DIABOLIQUE.


SUNDAY, DAY 2:

SEQUENCE FIVE: "A Mountain into a Molehill"
In Hollywood, Act Two is the home of writer’s block and suicide. Chris Soth shows you how to transform this challenge to an adventure in writing. Break it into 4 Mini-Movies!

MORNING BREAK

SEQUENCE SIX – "The Homestretch"
CLIMAX! TURNING POINT! And into Act Three – How your last two Mini-Movies wrap it up and send them home satisfied!

LUNCH!  AFTERNOON BREAK

SEQUENCE SEVEN: "Write it Right, Every Time!"
The keys to the perfect genre film: The Detective Story, The Love Story, The Caper, The Escape and MORE, 10 Story Genres in all…how they work, the Mini-Movies that make them up!

SEQUENCE EIGHT: "The Perfect Ending"
What are Mini-Movies? They’re MOVIES unto themselves!  Break them down to micromovies, nanomovies and beyond!

Roll Credits: Go home and write your easiest and best script ever!

SECOND DAY includes screenings and analysis of CASABLANCA, COOL HAND LUKE, TERMINATOR and IT’S A WONDERFUL LIFE.
